VESPERS OF RHYTHM AND FIRE

A preacher said, “You do not believe what my church teaches.  Where is your faith?”

The Gadfly answered, “Do you think we have faith by following the pious down their garden paths?  Is faith strong in our hearts when we raise our voices like partisan dust rags for the polishing of this or that doctrine?  We do not have faith by kneeling before the starved imaginations of those who paint all life with the meager colors of their own propriety.  We have faith when the love of our spirits and the hunger of our stomachs embrace in a passionate and intimate dance.  We have faith when we have the courage to open our hearts and listen to life and death serenading one another, with a song whose melody is the kindling fire of the stars and whose rhythm is the heart beat of the earth.”
